Rationale

Notes

Essential fatty acids (EFAs)
1 teaspoon1 tablespoon poured over food

EFAs contain vitamins A and E and promote healthy coat and skin.

This supplement comes in liquid form or as gel tablets; follow package directions.

Folic acid
200400 mcg/day

This B vitamin is essential for red blood cell development and maintenance, and for the nervous system.

Commonly available in capsule form. In supplemented pet foods that have been stored for long periods of time, folic acid may have decreased potency.

Glucosamine
and chondroitin
500 mg glucosamine, 400 mg chondroitin for dogs; half that amount for cats

These supplements may help promote healthy joints.

You can break up pills into the pet's food. Some pet supplements come in treat form; follow package directions.

Vitamin C
1 pinch (about 250 mg), added to food

Antioxidants support the immune system.

Powdered vitamin C is easiest to use.
