Herbs and supplements for hair loss


Beta-sitosterol

Dose: 60–130 mg/day
Rationale: Beta-sitosterol has been shown to inhibit 5-alpha reductase’s creation of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that shuts down hair production.
Notes: No significant side effects have been reported.

Biotin

Dose: 30 mcg/day
Rationale: Biotin, a water-soluble B vitamin, aids in metabolism of protein, fats, and carbohydrates and is believed to be associated with hair growth.
Notes: Other than isolated incidents, no significant side effects have been reported.

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens)

Dose: 100 mg, 2x/day
Notes: Other than isolated incidents, no significant side effects have been reported.
Rationale: Studies suggest saw palmetto’s fatty acids and sterols hinder the formulation of dihydrotestosterone.

Stinging nettle root (Urtica dioica)

Dose: 120 mg standardized extract, 2x/day


Notes: Nettle root may occasionally cause mild stomach upset. Take with food to lessen risk of this reaction.
Rationale: Compounds in stinging nettle root appear to hamper hormones and proteins that carry testosterone, which may explain how it inhibits dihydrotestosterone.
