Black cohosh

What it is:

Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa or Cimicifuga racemosa) is a North American perennial plant containing vitamins A and B5.

Benefits

Historically, the plant has been used to treat everything from colds and kidney disorders to lung and neurological conditions. Today it is primarily used to lessen menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood changes. Study results are mixed, but the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has reported that black cohosh may help alleviate menopausal symptoms for up to 6 months. Combined with soy isoflavones and dong quai, it also may help treat menopause-related migraines.
