Nutmeg Heals Naturally

Nutmeg Heals Naturally

You may think of nutmeg as merely a hint of flavor in pumpkin pie or a pretty sprinkle atop frothy eggnog. But you may get more than a tasty treat when you include this potent seed in your cooking. In the West Indies, nutmeg oil is used as a natural treatment for arthritis, malaria, asthma and pneumonia. Aside from its purported medicinal values, a hint of nutmeg adds an exotic element to a variety of dishes. Nosh with nutmeg using this sweet recipe:

Nutmeg Syrup

2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon dark rum
1 teaspoon nutmeg

1. In a small saucepan, bring sugar and water to boil. Cook and stir until sugar dissolves. Stir in rum and nutmeg. Cool. Serve over ice cream, banana bread, crepes or pancakes.
