Like the sun on a hazy summer day, winter’s bluster can chap your lips, maybe without you knowing it. Natural lip balm should be an essential part of your skin care routine during these frosty days.
Here’s a look at some of our favorite all-natural lip protectors to keep your lips soft, kissable, and damage-free.
Our top
picks
Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
This balm, in tin or tube, is Burt’s best-selling product.
The peppermint and comfrey refresh and cool. Because of its
familiar flavor, this balm may be a good “transition”
product for those looking to switch to a natural balm.
Eco Lips Lip Balm
Eco Lips’ tag line is “Don’t
panic—it’s organic!” And more than 70 percent of
its ingredients are organic. Eco Lips is made for those who spend a
lot of time outside, so all the balms are SPF 15 or 30. The balm
works great even under tough (extremely hot or cold) conditions.
The handy carabiner helps attach the balm to your bag, jacket, or
bike to keep close by for lip emergencies.
Sun Dog Hemp Lip Balm
Based on a Native American recipe, this balm has just four main
ingredients: avocado oil, certified organic hemp oil, beeswax, and
rosemary extract—plus essential oil for flavoring. The
orange-and-ginger-flavored balm adds some pizzazz to your lips
without being overpowering. Hemp is a rich source of protein,
essential fatty acids, and amino acids, and the ingredients make
for a balm with a thick, protective feeling.
Urban Farm Lip Balm
Urban Farm makes two types of lip balm: citrus-flavored Day Lip
Balm and unflavored Nite Lip Balm. The Day Balm is SPF 15 for sun
protection, as well as moisture. The Nite Balm has added rosemary.
Both have plenty of antioxidants to protect and heal your lips. The
company eschews lanolin, derived from sheep, and calls its balms
vegetarian.
Weleda Everon Lip Balm
Weleda lip balms include rose extract and rose wax, ingredients
used for their skin-soothing properties. Men may at first be put
off by the rose flavor, but once they get used to the scent
they’ll be hooked on the balm’s comforting effects and
long-lasting protection.
